This freelance appointment will be key to its success and will require a continual but varying time commitment across three years from Sept 2024 to March 2027. About us Snodhill Castle is the ‘sleeping beauty’s castle’ of Herefordshire’s Golden Valley. In 2015 it was a neglected ruin, close to collapse; in 2016, it was saved by the people of Snodhill who formed the Snodhill Castle Preservation Trust with the backing of Historic England. Today, the ten-acre site is being conserved by experts, investigated by student archaeologists and enjoyed by a steadily expanding public. Designed to strengthen the Trust’s infrastructure and greatly expand our scope and range of engagement activity, it will entail implementing IT and other organisational infrastructure, procuring onsite hardware, managing contracts with specialist suppliers, liaising with The National Lottery Heritage Fund, observing governance procedures and managing risk across the project. We have no paid staff and rely on a volunteer management committee to which you will report. Snodhill Castle Preservation Trust
Qualified Ecologist (ideally with CIEEM membership)

We’re a small volunteer-run charity responsible for conserving Snodhill Castle in Herefordshire’s Golden Valley, some 7 miles east of Hay on Wye. Widely held to be a hidden gem of the area, the 10 acre grass and wooded site (open to the public) hosts over 150 species of moth and a number of notable veteran trees, as well as the odd visiting hobby, a gang of redstarts, slow worms and glow worms too. We need a fully qualified consultant ecologist (ideally with CIEEM membership and experience in the England/Wales borderlands) to provide, a comprehensive assessment of the current condition of the ecology and habitat of our site, its value as a resource, and recommendations for improvement to support our flora and fauna, and where possible increase variety and populations. This is an exciting opportunity to help SCPT conserve and enrich our extraordinary castle and its beautiful site, and bring it to members of the public as a space to enjoy wildlife diversity and landscape, as well as history. The survey and recommendations will inform the development of the trust’s strategy and business plan, feed into the production of a conservation management plan for the site as a whole, and inform any planning applications needed for the construction of ecologically sensitive facilities to support our community engagement activities. The work is being commissioned as part of Fortifying the Future, a three-year project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund with funds made possible by National Lottery players. The anticipated start date for the work is 16/09/2024, with final completion by 16/09/2025.
